Reviews

This history features detailed chapters on all of the major personalities associated with the development of the digital computer. An introductory chapter acquaints the reader with historical precedents and relevant efforts by such varied figures as Leibniz and Babbage. Subsequent chapters deal with Stibitz and the Bell computers, Aiken and the Harvard Mark I, the British cryptography contribution (Turing et al.), Eckert and Mauchly's ENIAC and later machines, and Von Neumann and the Princeton computers. The book is clearly written with as much attention to the personalities as to technical concerns. Some areas of this history are still subject to change or clarification as new information becomes available, but Ritchie has put together an interesting account. Recommended. Hilary D.
