Reviews

This interesting, informative book examines the forces leading to the present crisis in the American steel industry, told through the events at a plant at Sparrows Point, Md., near Baltimore. Drawing upon archival documents, published materials, and interviews, journalist Reutter details the lifestyle of the high-powered executives who designed and managed the operation as well as the world of the workers who lived out their lives in the company-owned mill town. The plant, founded in 1887 and run by Bethlehem Steel, now operates at 30 percent of capacity after peaking in the 1950s. Highly recommended. Leonard Grundt, Nassau Community Coll.
