Larry McMurtry is the author of twenty-nine novels, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Lonesome Dove, three memoirs, two collections of essays, and more than thirty screenplays. He lives in Archer City, Texas.

The action starts fast in this dry comedy when Harmony, a middle-aged ex-showgirl living in Vegas, receives a letter bearing tidings of her daughter's death in New York. Harmony's two sisters fly out from the family's hometown (Tarwater, Oklahoma) to salve Harmony's grief. The letter writer invites Harmony to NYC to talk, so the stage is set for the backbone of the book: road trip! The ship of fools--Harmony and her sisters, plus Harmony's factoid-spouting five-year-old--head across the continent, their car breaks down, the U-Haul falls into a canyon, they befriend a stray dog, and they eventually arrive safely in the Big Apple. What to do? McMurtry avails himself of his Chandlerian intervention (throw dog from statue). That detours them to DC to meet Billary, thence on back home to Tarwater. There McMurtry out-Chandlers Chandler and brings in--you guessed it--that man with the gun. An absurd story but impossible to buck once readers saddle up. Captain Call
