Grade 3-6 A factual, readable account of Bartholdi's life and his efforts to make the Statue of Liberty a reality. Bartholdi's idealismhis desire to highlight the friendship between two countries and his admiration for democratic governmentis emphasized. However, his disillusionment with the hurried, mercenary quality of life in the United States and the lack of enthusiasm for funding the statue is also acknowledged. There are numerous excellent illustrations, photographs (some in color) and reproductions of historical documents which complement the text. A color poster of the monument is included. Fox' research is impeccable, but there is no index or table of contents. A list of measurements is included. Despite its attractive layout, the book is still eclipsed by Mary J. Shapiro's How They Built the Statue of Liberty (Random, 1985) due to Huck Scarry's ample, imaginative drawings. The Maestros' lavishly illustrated picture book The Story of the Statue of Liberty (Lothrop, 1986) is more appropriate for younger children. Deborah Vose, Brooklyn Friends School Library
