There are no crumbling grain elevators, foreclosure signs, reservations, or virtually anything else that is disturbing in Sobel and Klonsky's book. The authors, two commercial photographers from Manhattan who are husband and wife, state in the text that they set out on their crosscountry trip to capture the "good" side of America. What they have produced, instead, is an idiosyncratic memoir of their vacation instead of an insightful portrait of the areas they visited. As such, the book is somewhat successful, owing mostly to the seductive imagery. Similar in style to Collins's "A Day in the Life" series, Heartlands is, however, a very insubstantial slice of American pie. A more serious flaw is the under-representation of diverse ethnic groups and minorities--of the over 125 plates, only a handful depict blacks and/or Native Americans. For coffee tables only.
