Ella the elephant, the worst speller in Miss Gator's schoolhouse, works very hard with the help of the other animals to improve her spelling

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Two slim volumes in a new series of early readers. Miss Gator teaches in a one-room schoolhouse in the Hokey Smokey Swamp, and her students learn not only the usual three R's, but also about "sharing, caring, and having fun." Readers are introduced to the class in Good Morning, Miss Gator, where they meet Buggy Bear (who learns about cleanliness), Tardy Toad (who is always late), Punky Skunky, Blake the Snake, and Ella (the bad speller). In the second volume, everyone becomes involved in helping Ella the Bad Speller win the spelling bee. Nervous Ella is strictly on her own when the big day arrives. (Or is she?) While shuffling the alphabet cards in her hands, they fall to the floor, miraculously spelling the word Constantinople , and Ella is declared "the best speller." The word in this contest should have been contrivance, for Ella spells by whim (the author's), not wit. The bright, exuberant illustrations are executed in Kraus' unique cartoon style, but they alone cannot carry these banal story lines. Although the bright red jackets and cleanly formatted pages will be enticements for purchase, the books are not worth it. Do your young patrons a favor and give them Random House's "Step into Reading" or Harper's "I Can Read" series instead. Both are far superior in storyline to these two books. --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH
