Describes the life cycle of the black skimmer and how one particular flock chose a parking lot for their rookery

Grade 2-5-- A rookery in the parking lot of a chemical plant in Texas? Fact is stranger than fiction. Because the natural habitat of the black skimmer is being increasingly eroded by human development, the birds are forced to find new nesting grounds. The opening and closing paragraphs touch on this fact but, basically, the text delineates the life cycle of the skimmer. New words are introduced in italics. The full-color photographs accentuate and enliven the crisp, factual text. Readers will be enthralled by the soaring birds and camouflaged chicks, and the sight of a chick holding an oyster shell in its mouth to signal its hunger is unique. Excellent in scope and certain to circulate. --Charlene J. Lenzen, Muskego Public Library, WI
