K-Gr 3-- Each of these books gives a lesson in reading a map or a very simple scale drawing. The idea, to instruct painlessly and memorably, is destroyed by characters without personality and contrived diction. Illustrations are in watercolor, crayon, and colored-pencils, but owe nothing to originality of execution. Bear's New House is measured out in ``bear feet'' calibrated into ``inchworms.'' Humanlike animals solve a mini-mystery in Detective Duckworth and wend their way to Mouse's Birthday Party. The two latter books feature illustrated street maps that define a bucolic setting. Typeface ignores the needs of beginning readers; the print is quite small, and the text is much too demanding for either new or tentative readers. The only place for these books is the supermarket checkout counter. --Gloria Amann, formerly at New York Public Library
