Grade 3-5-- Brewster, a black-footed ferret living in South Dakota, falls in love with the music of a travelling bayou band, and bicycles down to Louisana to hear them again. The characters he meets in the swamp, a colorful collection of good ol' boys and girls, are suspicious of outsiders, but Brewster is determined to make a place for himself. His new bicycle messenger service overcomes fire ants, mud, and the vicious bayou bloodhounds to become a valuable part of the community. Comparisons with The Mouse and the Motorcycle (Morrow, 1965) are probably inevitable, but the wild back hollow life of the Moustafaya Swamp is light years away from Cleary's more sedate world, and Brewster has his own unique kind of courage. Propelled by his obsession with Cajun zydeco music, Brewster the ferret rides his bike from South Dakota to the Moustafaya Swamp in the Louisiana bayous. Unfortunately, the swamp creatures (except for Swamp Sallie, a big-hearted alligator) prove so clannish that Brewster is shunned as an outsider until he undertakes a dangerous mission: riding his bicycle along a road menaced by a pack of slavering bloodhounds, he takes a broken accordion to the repair shop and thereby saves the day for his beloved band, who would otherwise have had to cancel the biggest dance of the year. With lots of local color and amusing drawings, this is a story with appeal for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider in a new place. Kovacs does her best to capture the verve of zydeco--she even quotes some lyrics--but the book almost demands a recording as accompaniment. (Fiction. 8-11) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP.
