Although replete with nuggets of practical information on personal finance and consumer issues, the broad-spectrum approach of this title makes its practicality questionable. In an encyclopedia format, the authors try to impart ways to apply business principles to everything from "Accountants" to "Weddings." Entries on true financial issues such as dealing with credit bureaus and surviving an IRS audit contain useful, if brief, information. More complete treatment would have been possible had such topics as "Disputes with Neighbors" and "Social Climbing" been eliminated. Lists such as "when to lease a car" and "warning signs of crooked tax preparers" are the most useful feature. Suggestions for additional reading for each entry would also have been helpful. The brevity of coverage and scattershot approach make this a marginal purchase for most libraries. Terry Savage Talks Money ( LJ 5/15/90) provides a more thorough and professional treatment of this subject.
