PreSchool-Grade 2-A mediocre rendition of the old song with lyrics and sound effects (yum yum, scratch scratch, etc.) on alternating double-page spreads. Undistinguished, full-page, pale watercolor paintings show a young girl as she goes to visit a mountain family and spends the night. Characters are comic sketches; even the animals appear silly. Robert Quackenbush's edition (Lippincott, 1988) is more imaginative and exciting. This classic tune deserves better treatment. Let this book go 'round the mountain; it won't be missed.
