Erler, coauthor of 550 Home Landscaping Ideas (S. & S., 1992), addresses 12 common landscaping problems: too much and too little water, shade, pest damage, problem soils, too much and too little space, unsightly views, steep slopes, high maintenance, cool climates, and seashore conditions. Most of her solutions have been amply covered in other gardening books; her most unusual ideas include constructing an amphitheater on a steep slope and using glass panels for a windbreak at the shore. The excellent color photographs are the main strength of this book--the healthy, beautifully arranged plants are themselves an inspiration. Note, however, that many of Erler's examples are from California or desert areas and will not translate well to other areas. Not an essential purchase, but gardeners everywhere will probably love this book.

Erler divides her book into 12 sections covering the most common landscaping problems: lack of water, too much water, too much shade, ongoing pest damage, soil limitations, lack of space, too much space, an unsightly view, a steep slope, too much maintenance, cool climate and short season, and seashore conditions. Each section opens with a description of the problem and a rundown of ways to deal with it. Specific solutions follow, most illustrated with photographs of real gardens where the problem has been solved. This colorful and practical book is an excellent addition to most gardening collections. George Cohen
