Unlike the numerous books (e.g., Ruth Clausen's Perennials for American Gardens , Random, 1989) that offer only alphabetical lists of perennials, this collection of photos and their captions illustrate ideas such as color harmony, seasonal color, lawn edges, slope plantings, water conservation, and much more. A unique and very useful approach; recommended for all public libraries with a gardening clientele.

In this stunning book, with 550 color photographs, Fell and Heath provide information on soil preparation, planting, propagation, dividing, and pest control of bulbs, ferns, grasses, herbs, vines, ground covers, shrubs, and what they call "true" perennials. A chapter on regional differences divides the plants into hardy, tender, cool season, warm season, the Northeast, the Midwest, the South, the Southwest and California, and the Pacific Northwest. There are chapters on seasonal changes and designing with perennials. The final chapter, devoted to perennials of distinction, lists 19 species that include such common plants as mums, iris, hostas, lilies, peonies, poppies, and tulips. George Cohen
