Most quotation books about women, such as Elaine Partnow's Quotable Woman: 1800-1981 ( LJ 6/1/83), her Quotable Woman: Eve to 1799 ( LJ 12/84) or Running Press's The Quotable Woman ( LJ 6/1/91), contain quotes by women. Starr, a lecturer and teacher at the Esalen Institute in California, has compiled an eclectic collection of quotations by males about the "inferior" female. Quotations from various cultures date from 3000 B.C. to the present and are arranged by chapters such as "Her Lesser Biology," "Evil Is Woman," and "Woman's Contemptible Weakness." The quotations reflect the widespread philosophy of woman as the inferior sex through multicultural proverbs, religious texts, and writings of various authors. The book is disturbing, provocative, and at times humorous. Entertaining, historical illustrations complement the text. A necessary purchase for women's studies collections. --Eva Lautemann, Dekalb College Lib. , Clarkston, Ga.
