Taylor gives it the old college try in this weighty book, which if nothing else will improve the strength of your wrists and forearms in seven days. Taylor tackles UNIX in 21 chapters and includes a calendar in the front cover to convince you that you will cover three chapters a day and survive. Each chapter explains the goals, summarizes your efforts, and quizzes you at the end (answers are provided at the back of the book). The massive amount of information provided in each educational unit is well organized, but the text, comments, and commands are nearly unreadable for tired eyes. Perhaps less information and a different physical format with kinder font choices would have produced a winner. This book might be better suited to those ready to tackle a specific topic at a more leisurely pace or as a ready reference for those new to UNIX.
