Text: English, French (translation)
In 1977, Aries, the distinguished French social historian, published the book that appeared in English as The Hour of Our Death ( LJ 2/1/81), a massive and widely acclaimed study of Western society's changing attitude towards death. This new book, aptly conceived as "an imaginary film" since it contains 397 illustrations (8 in color), pursues the same theme: the text describes how individuals and societies in the long span of Latin Christianity have shaped their images of death to meet contemporary beliefs and social realities of dying. Catacombs, tombs, epitaphs, charnel houses, gravestones, and virtually every kind of written, pictorial, or architectural record have been analyzed to produce this remarkable iconographic history. Cultural and art historians will want to consult it, though they will deplore the lack of an index. Bennett D. Hill, St. Anselm's Abbey, Washington, D.C.
