Destination Argentina: A Land of Superlatives

From the dense tropical jungles in the north to the frozen landscape of Antarctica in the south, from the snowy peaks of the Andes in the West, across high plains, Las Pampas, and Patagonia to the Atlantic coast, Argentina is a land of exceptional geographic diversity. It's also a land of superlatives. The highest mountain in the western hemisphere, Aconcagua (22,834 ft), towers 4,000 ft above the crest of the Andes. Ushuaia, on the Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego, is the world's southernmost city. The Continental Ice Cap spreads over 8,400 sq mi in southern Patagonia, descending into glaciers that crash in gigantic chunks from 150-ft walls into the lakes and streams of the Parque Nacional los Glaciares. In the northeast, on the border with Brazil and Paraguay, the Iguazú Falls spill over a horseshoe-shape ledge into a beautiful explosion of 275 waterfalls, varying in height from 140 to 300 ft.

Eco-Heaven

In Argentina, where climates range from tropical to subantarctic and altitudes descend from 22,000 ft to below sea-level, every conceivable environment on earth is represented: high, low, hot, cold, temperate, dry, wet, and frozen. Because the population (about 40 million) is small relative to its land mass (roughly 2,000 mi long and 900 mi wide), a staggering variety of plants, birds, and animals thrive undisturbed in their habitats.

If you're looking for hot jungles, cool forests, windy plains, mountains, glaciers, swamps, or deserts, fish or fowl, birds galore, sea and land mammals, jungle beasts and bugs, exotic plants, trees, and acres of wildflowers, you can find them here in this land of unlimited bio-diversity.

Outdoor Activities

Fishing in the national parks of Patagonia's northern lake district (especially around Bariloche) is legendary. Either hire a local guide or stay a week in a rustic fishing lodge and enjoy the pristine lakes and streams jumping with trout and salmon. Opportunities, too, abound for hiking and mountain biking in Argentina's national and provincial parks, over its mountain trails, and through its forests to lakes, villages, and campgrounds.

Since Argentina's seasons are the opposite of North America's, you can ski or snowboard from June to September. Las Leñas near Mendoza (in the Cuyo), Catedral near Bariloche, and Chapelco near San Martín de los Andes (in Patagonia) are some of the best ski areas. These areas offer groomed runs, open bowls, and trails that follow the fall line to cozy inns or luxurious hotels. Smaller areas near Bariloche, Esquel, and Mendoza have good day facilities and lodgings in the towns. Tierra Mayor, a family-run nordic center near Ushuaia has such novelties as dogsled rides, snowcat trips, and wind skiing.
