Wolf's second Toontown mystery is short on inspiration, long on feeble puns and sure to disappoint lovers of Who Framed Roger Rabbitstet no question mark/rl , the animated cartoon adapted from his Who Censored Roger Rabbit? Wolf's frantic prose fails to capture the comic spirit, including the repeal of the laws of physics, that makes animated cartoons so surprising and funny. The plot, such as it is, has addlepated Roger hiring hard-boiled PI Eddie Valiant to investigate a scandal-sheet story pairing impossibly curvaceous Jessica Rabbit with Clark Gable, one of Roger's rivals for the role of Rhett in Selznick's planned musical comedy, Gone with the Wind . Eddie soon suspects Jessica of playing more than pat-a-cakes with Clark. Complications include murder, theft and corruption, but in the end who cares who p-p-p-plugged Rabbit?

Wolf's sequel to Who Censured Roger Rabbit?, the basis for the wildly successful film, presents private eye Eddie Valiant with some conflicting jobs: Roger Rabbit wants him to find out whether Clark Gable's beaten him out for the lead in Gone With the Wind--as well as out of wife Jessica's affections; David Selznick wants him to investigate the theft of a mysterious box from his office (the suspects are the three actors auditioning for Rhett Butler: Gable, Baby Herman, and Roger); Gable wants Eddie to find out who's been planting tabloid stories that say he's gay; and the murder of shadowy toon Kirk Enigman with Eddie's own gun sparks a search for the secret formula for Toon Tonic, which turns people into animated Toons (and vice versa). Lots of comic subplots and compulsive wordplay with the new toons Ferd Flatfoot (Eddie's brother-in-law) and Joellyn Rabbit (Jessica's 5-inch twin sister), who comes on to Eddie by popping out of a cupcake. But the net effect of all the high jinks (``I hate being hoisted by a woman half the size of my own petard'') is wearying; you'll be reminded of why S.J. Perelman never wrote a novel. Wolf (born January 24, 1941) is an American author. He is best known as the author of Who Censored Roger Rabbit? (1981), which was adapted into the hit feature-length film Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). Wolf and childhood friend John J. Myers, former Catholic Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, co-wrote a novel named Space Vulture, released by TOR books during 2008. Wolf and co-author Jehane Baptiste have a story named "The UnHardy Boys in Outer Space" in the annual anthology of humorous science fiction, Amityville House of Pancakes Vol. 3. Gary K. Wolf is best known for creating the comedic mystery series centered on Roger Rabbit, a cartoon character in an alternate universe where "toons" and humans coexist. The series began with Who Censored Roger Rabbit? (1981), which inspired the hit film Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). In the original novel, Eddie Valiant, a hard-boiled detective, is hired by Roger Rabbit, a comic strip star, to investigate broken promises from his employers. The case spirals into a murder mystery exposing deception, a magical genie, and Roger's true nature. The series continued with Who P-P-P-Plugged Roger Rabbit? (1991), retconning the original as Jessica Rabbit's dream and aligning with the Disney film. Eddie investigates new murders and Roger's scheming cousin, Dodger Rabbit, in a noir-inspired tale blending toons and human intrigue. In The Road to Toontown (2012), Wolf collected short stories, including a new Jessica Rabbit narrative that delves deeper into the Roger Rabbit universe. The series returned with Who Wacked Roger Rabbit? (2013), where Eddie Valiant protects actor Gary Cooper during a Toontown film shoot, uncovering threats and sinister underworld schemes. In Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business (2022), Jessica Rabbit is reimagined as Jessica Krupnick, a human turned secret agent for the XERIOUS Organization, showcasing her intelligence and evolution beyond her femme fatale origins. In 2001, Wolf sued The Walt Disney Company for unpaid royalties. After appeals and hearings, Wolf prevailed in 2005. Wolf proposed a prequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit in 2013, reimagining Disney's The Stooge with Roger and Mickey Mouse, exploring Roger's backstory and his relationship with Jessica Rabbit. Following Roger Rabbit's cameo in Disney+'s 2022 Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers film, reports emerged that character rights were reverting to Wolf. The novel features the original main characters Roger Rabbit, Eddie Valiant, Jessica Rabbit, and Baby Herman. Their personalities conform to those established in the Who Framed Roger Rabbit film, such as Jessica's devotion to Roger and Roger's cartoony quirks such as his speech impediment. The story starts out with Eddie Valiant at the front door of Roger Rabbit's house. Almost immediately after he is let inside the house, Roger tells him about the upcoming Gone with the Wind toon adaptation and how he has a chance to play the lead as Rhett Butler. However, the Telltale News, a newspaper that tends to toons, prints an article about Jessica Rabbit and her relationship with Clark Gable. Introduced in this novel is Jessica's diminutive twin sister, Joellyn, who becomes Eddie's main love interest as he has broken up with his girlfriend, along with Eddie's sister, who is in a mixed-race marriage with a toon, and has three children with her toon husband. From here, the story branches out to the murders of Kirk Enigman (another candidate for the part of Rhett Butler), Baby Herman, and Dodger Rabbit (Roger Rabbit's evil cousin).
