Synopsis

In Death Is Now My Neighbor, Colin Dexter confirms his status as one of the finest living crime writers with a baffling mystery that is also a study of the academic and sexual jealousy behind the facade of an Oxford college.

The peaceful quadrangle of Lonsdale College seems remote from the shocks of the outside world. But things at Lonsdale are not as tranquil as they appear. The Master of the college is retiring, and two senior dons are vying discreetly but furiously to succeed him. There are only two people to whom the coveted appointment means more -- their wives.

Chief Inspector Morse, investigating the murder of a young woman in North Oxford, follows a trail that leads first to a tabloid journalist, then to the strip clubs of Soho. It soon winds back, however, to the university. For Morse and his partner, Sergeant Lewis, the question becomes: Is the Mastership of Lonsdale worth killing for?

Dexter beguiles us with sly wit as he continues to develop his portrayal of Morse -- aging, ailing, but as brilliant and exasperating as ever -- and of his loyal and long-suffering colleague, Lewis. Death Is Now My Neighbor is a rich, complex, and always surprising entertainment.

From the Inside Flap

Reviews

Kevin Whately is an admirable guide to the latest episode from Colin Dexter. Inspector Morse puzzles over the death of a young woman, with frequent stops at the pub, and follows the usual assortment of red herring leads. Whately is excellent with Morse's querulousness and equally adept at Sergeant Lewis's shy, good nature. The abridgment is quite smooth even as the focus switches between interviews of suspects and the succession of power in one of the Oxford colleges. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Most listeners will recognize Chief Inspector Morse as the music-loving, cranky detective from PBS's Mystery! series. Here, Morse has to cope with the problems of aging and ill health as he works toward solving the crime. He and his loyal assistant, Detective Lewis, set out to investigate the murders of a young physical therapist and a tabloid reporter and are soon led to Oxford and a rivalry at Lonsdale College between two dons vying for the retiring master's position, the rivalry even extending to their wives. The story teems with assignations, making it difficult at times to determine just who is meeting whom. Dexter writes with considerable skill, and the quickly moving plot will keep listeners anxiously awaiting the next clue. However, the abrupt scene changes require careful listening to avoid confusion. Morse, brilliant but irascible, displays an endearing humanity, an added dimension in a work with few memorable characters. Kevin Whately, who plays Lewis in the PBS series, reads convincingly, but at times his British dialect is difficult to understand. For popular fiction collections.?Nancy R. Ives, SUNY at Geneseo
