Like the self-help titles published by Nolo Press, these manuals are intended for individuals who want to be better informed consumers of legal services or wish to handle their own legal affairs. The manuals are prepared in association with HALT, a national nonprofit consumer advocacy group devoted to helping citizens handle legal affairs simply, affordably, and equitably. Each manual is written in plain language; when used, legal terms are defined in the text. Each volume contains a glossary, appendixes of helpful agencies and/or model documents, and an annotated bibliography of resources for futher reading. The manuals are multijurisdictional in nature, so users must be sure to check on the specific laws and practices of their own states. These manuals are not for the timid; they take an activist approach and assume that the user is assertive and sufficiently motivated to actually follow the suggestions. The manuals should be read thoroughly for a comprehensive overview of the subject before the user acts on any suggestion. Also, while the purpose of these manuals is to equip consumers to handle their own affairs, the books should provide a disclaimer that states that they are not a substitute for legal advice nor are they, as overview texts, authoritative for every specific case. Moreover, it would be helpful if more specific information about HALT were included in each manual, since it is vital that users know something about the credibility of the organization preparing these important materials.
