Reviews

PreSchool-- These concept books use full-color photographs of familiar items for identification. Home categorizes household items by the rooms in which they can be found; the brief text is unoriginal and not appropriate to many families, e.g., "We keep our toys in the playroom." Opposites employs pictures of toys, objects in nature, and more household items to demonstrate ideas such as "in and out" and "thick and thin." The spreads in Seasons show various symbols that represent each period of the year; the primary emphasis of spring is Easter and of winter, Christmas. Accompanying the illustrations of such items as flowers, chicks, swimsuits, and beach balls are trite descriptions. Touch explains this sense with examples of objects and how they feel, such as "furry rabbits" and "smooth paper." Like Opposites , it uses single words or phrases to describe concepts, and so does not suffer from the lackluster writing style of Seasons and Home . All four selections share a rigid design and accurate, but cold, lifeless photographs. Choose Tana Hoban's Of Colors and Things (1989), Is It Rough? Is It Smooth? Is It Shiny? (1984) or Exactly the Opposite (1990, all Greenwillow), as far better examples of photographic concept books.
