Grade 4-8-While not a comprehensive overview of the workings of the body, this volume presents a great deal of information not often brought together in one resource. The question-and-answer format, supplemented by the extensive index, helps readers to focus on specific topics. The book begins with basics on cells and addresses the body's various systems, genetics, growth and reproduction, personality and intelligence, health and nutrition, and the history of medicine. What doesn't neatly fall into such categories is assigned to a catchall section called "Who, what, where, when, why, how?," which answers such questions as "Why are lips red?" or "What is the difference between a tickle and an itch?" The material is well written and appropriate for the target audience, without being overloaded with technical terminology. There are plenty of full-color drawings and diagrams and a smattering of photographs to enhance readers' understanding. In all, a good supplementary title for most collections.

Gr. 5-8. While the accessible question-and-answer format suggests an elementary-school audience, the information in this original paperback (part of the 1001 Questions and Answers series) is fairly sophisticated. Arranged primarily by physiological systems, the book also includes up-to-date facts about "Body Basics" and "Health and Medicine." In addition, there is a section entitled "Who, What, Where, When, Why, How?" that covers a wide variety of topics ranging from Freud and food poisoning to AIDS and interferon. Profusely illustrated with diagrams that are clear and attractive, this also has some small paintings with an unfortunate textbookish look. Although the detailed index increases the book's value as a reference tool, the book should also attract scientifically minded browsers. The paper quality is better than that of the average softcover. Julie Corsaro
