PreSchool-Grade 2AThis entry in Mayer's Critters series for beginning readers, not to be confused with books using the same characters and written for older readers, is told in verse. Captain Short Bob, a pirate king, whips up a sticky batch of "ooey gooey pirate delight," a combination of tuna and bubble gum. While tasting his culinary creation, he loses his gold tooth and, in the quest to retrieve it, meets a sea creature and takes a trip underwater. Labeled drawings of the animal personalities that appear in both series are pictured after the title page. The bright, acrylic cartoon illustrations, in the usual Mayer style, are delightfully cluttered. Appealing fare for new readers.AMarsha McGrath, Clearwater Public Library, FL
