Presenting the winner of the first Dr. Seuss Picture Book Award!THWAKK! goes the tail of Blueberry Sprig as he flicks an annoying fly off his broad back.SLURP! goes Smithfield's tongue as he quickly gobbles it up.It sure sounds like the makings of a perfect friendship--and before you know it, cow and chameleon have moved in together. But wait, domestic bliss is turning to discord! It seems that Smithfield is a neat freak and Blueberry Sprig is a total slob. Can this classic odd couple overcome their differences and live happily ever after? Here's a funny, satisfying picture book by a bright new talent that celebrates the trials and tribulations of simply getting along.
PreSchool-Grade 2-Blueberry Sprig, a "cow-about-town," meets Smithfield, an elegant chameleon and chef, and the two form a fast friendship. They share many activities, but their greatest pleasure is "bug-thwakking." Blueberry Sprig thwakks flys with his tail and Smithfield slurps them up with his long tongue. Despite this satisfying symbiosis, their personal habits-the cow is messy, the lizard is neat-cause discord. In the end, they accept each other's differences and both are happy. The message, clearly indicated in a note to readers on the first page, is obvious, yet the story itself concentrates on the ups and downs of friendship and avoids heavy-handed moralizing. The softly toned colored-pencil illustrations are mildly humorous. They fare better when depicting the bovine than the reptilian, and there seems to be some disparity from picture to picture in the size relationship between them. However, the idea of friends with different habits and personalities finding a common bond is a worthy one and, while not a necessary purchase, this story is both useful and fun.
