F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. Upon graduating from Princeton, he served in the Army and worked briefly in advertising. He married his wife, Zelda, in 1920, a week after his first novel, This Side of Paradise, was published. His works, considered by many to be classics, include The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night, and the uncompleted The Last Tycoon. He died of a heart attack at the age of 44.
Seven classic short stories and two novellas, rich in the poetry and social history of their author, make up this anthology of Fitzgerald's fiction. The actors are all excellent. Blythe Danner performs "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" with warmth, humor, and humanity. She gives a thrilling reading of a wonderfully satisfying coming-of-age story. Martha Plimpton brings "The Ice Palace" to rich life in its striking first sentence: "The sunlight dripped over the house like golden paint over an art jar." Robert Sean Leonard captures the fun and fantasy of "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz," Campbell Scott the tragic drama of "May Day." One finishes these stories, so redolent of the desperate hopes and decadence of their age, with a desire to return to the first tape and admire them again. G.H.
