Essays average 26 pages of biography and criticism written in an entertaining and scholarly style. Among the authors covered are Mann, Garcia Lorca, Brecht, Andersen, Balzac, Freud, Grass, de Beauvoir, Colette, and Sand. The inclusion of information on the Arthurian legend, medieval drama and satire, Norse sagas, and the Renaissance makes this almost a short course in comparative literature-and, since the essays are excellent reading, a most palatable one. At the end of each signed entry is a selected bibliography of editions of works in the author's native language, available translations, and other biographical and critical studies.
