Because of omission and compression, these factual accounts of 92 emperors from Augustus to Romulus Augustulus will not be readily comprehensible to the general audience for whom they were designed. However, excerpts from ancient authors highlight eccen tricities of individuals. Maps, genealo gies, and appendixes offer help in sort ing out details, but there is no bibliography. For some, Grant's com pilation may serve as a handy but limit ed reference tool; certainly it is no sub stitute for any readable history that treats not only personalities, war, and politics but also literature and the arts.
