Describes a number of small self-contained communities, including a sand dune, tidal pool, old barn, and vacant lot, and examines the ways in which the plants and animals interact.

Grade 5 Up Smith describes the inter-relationships, or ecosystems, of 11 ``small worlds,'' explaining in leisurely prose some of the physical and behavioral characteristics of selected species as well as aspects of life cycles, animal roles in the food chain, and the dependencies among plants and animals. Unlike the many children's books commonly dealing with a certain few habitats (the forest, the seashore, etc.), Small Worlds reveals unusual and varied choices. Smith examines the animals and plants that share life in an old house, the milkweed plant, a tidal pool, cliffs and boulders, an old wooden barn, a waterfall spray area, a single tree, a fence line on the prairie, roadside areas, and the ubiquitous vacant lot. Each essay links numerous explanations in prose that is logical and clear, although somewhat complex. Some less familiar plant and animal species are described in the text, but the only illustrations are occasional small pen drawings. An informative survey for patient readers, this book offers interesting possibilities for the teaching of ecology. Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston
