A companion volume to the BBC series The Living Isles (1985), this title scans the natural history of Britain and Ireland, beginning with the Ice Age. The book is divided into two sections: the first has chapters on geologic history, rivers and lakes, woodlands, islands, tidelands, and wildlife. Discussions of the ecosystems of heaths, moors, bogs, woods, and hedgerows are readable and nicely illustrated. The second section is a "gazetteer" listing 450 nature reserves in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales with notable features and geologic history briefly mentioned. While written for residents of the British Isles, this guide still would come in handy for travelers, Anglophiles, and natural history buffs. Appropriate for larger collections.
