Daphne encounters love, friendship, courage, and betrayal in the academic world
"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
The book opens with a flashback of the unfolding of a deep friendship between confused young bride, Daphne, and a warm, nurturing, home-loving German woman, a virtual evangelist for the importance of home and hearth. The reader comes to the realization long before Daphne reveals it that her "dearest friend" is actually hard at work stealing her husband. Daphne, now 46 and lonely after the death of her lover and her daughter's sudden decision to live with her father, finds herself in the ironic position of potentially destroying another marriage to find her own happiness. Thayer is the author of several contemporary romances, including last year's Spirit Lost (LJ 9/15/88), and Morning (LJ 1/88), which deals with women's ability to conceive, artistically as well as literally. As with her earlier works, the plot and writing are often contrived, but this will entertain readers looking for a modern romance with some insights into human relations.

Though this timely romantic novel by bestselling author Thayer ( Stepping ; Three Women at the Water's Edge ) starts out slowly, it turns into a winner. Divorcee Daphne Miller is the mother of a 16-year-old daughter who takes off abruptly for California to live with a father she has not heard from for 14 years. Deprived of child support payments, Daphne moves into a country shack. Once a college professor like her ex-husband and two married swains, she is now a lowly but plucky department secretary. Flashbacks reveal her best friend's betrayal and its impact on Daphne's marriage, and counterpoint her slow recovery during which Daphne again allows friends to play key roles in her life. Despite Thayer's penchant for overly detailed and repetitious descriptions, her portrayal of Daphne's renewal as a woman capable of life on her own makes for engrossing and, at times, inspiring reading.
