Reviews

Grade 4 Up-- A brief book that offers a great deal of information about the continent at the South Pole. The writing is clear and competent; the book is a pleasure to read. Although much of it is an extensive summary of facts about Antarctica, a narrative thread is spun from Hackwell's experiences in a research effort. He tells of the various people accompanying his expedition, and recounts special problems of arctic travel, especially the equipment and navigational problems in reaching and offloading supplies. He describes scientific work and its importance to us and evaluates some of the planning for the Antarctic by developers who hope to harvest icebergs, sell dried krill, and explore for offshore oil. He comments on the dangers posed by greed to use the resources, but also suggests that the difficulty of collecting will prevent easy exploitation and protect the continent in the near future. Useful in schools, in environmental studies programs, and for public libraries in general. --Elizabeth Morrissett, Alaska State Library, Juneau
