Poems set in Italy and in the small towns of rural New England deal with culture, mortality and religion

In Lea's fourth book of poetry, many of the 26 poems, incorporating lines from the Bible, implicitly offer praise while depicting seasonal changes, travel to Italy, and the bleak lives of New England farmers and fishermen ("Ice-fishers' lights. O little city/ . . . how still we see thee"). With lyrical grace, he elucidates the diurnal in terms of the spiritual: comforting his dying brother, his mother is seen as a pieta; during a duck-hunting trip, duck, dog, farmer, and man stand in a moment of mystery against "the awful snow," symbolizing "how we must seek to save forever/ what we receive of what goes by." In poems that explore the spiritual dimensions of the human condition, Lea, like Robert Frost, seeks out simple fishermen's lives to find answers for a complex struggle with mortality.
