This supplement, the latest addition to the well-known "American Writers" series, includes 29 authors. All except Frederick Douglass, the 19th-century orator and writer, are 20th-century poets, novelists, dramatists, and essayists. Baechler and Litz have selected 14 poets, including Djuna Barnes, Jean Toomer, and Alice Walker, whose writing encompasses other genres. The biographical essays, written by scholars and critics, present the authors' lives and works comprehensively, incorporating analysis, interpretation, criticism, and biographical detail. Bibliographies of works, critical studies, and manuscripts follow each essay. This supplement includes a cumulative index. Highly recommended for libraries supporting American literature studies.
