White, coauthor of the definitive AIA Guide to New York City , here arranges 58 walking tours of Paris. He cites more than 2000 buildings, monuments, parks, and bridges in all 20 arrondissements (zones) of Paris. He makes no bones about his likes and dislikes but expresses his convictions with great wit and erudition, "more to open discussion than to end it." Although organized geographically and promoted as a tour of the city, his encyclopedic compendium is more a reference work of Parisian treasures than a guide for the street walker. Its 25 overly detailed maps (taken from an atlas of the city) are somewhat difficult to read and follow. Other guidebooks on the market (i.e., the Michelin green guide) do a better job of leading one around. A system of one to five stars indicates the "importance and priority" of the various structures. Recommended especially for connoisseurs who have already done some exploring of the major sights.
