NEALE S. GODFREY, the former President of the First Women's Bank, is also the author of the bestsellers A Penny Saved and Money Doesn't Grow on Trees. She lives with her two children in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey.
Here is a scary thought. "If you take a friend out to dinner in 1996, you could still be paying for it in 2010." However, this money primer for women is not based on fear; instead, it relies on a great deal of financial know-how as well as a large quantity of common sense. Godfrey (with the help of coauthor Richards) wields recognizable metaphors taken from the fashion world to describe our takes on money--including clueless, traditionalist, and contemporary classic. By her wit and some inventive quizzes and soul-searching questionnaires, she shows exactly how to control bucks through seven life stages, from first apartment to retirement. A lot of list making and habit monitoring, naturally, are the first steps, but the majority of the information relies heavily on her credentials (former exec at Chase Manhattan) and on a unique communications style that readers just can't ignore. Barbara Jacobs
In her previous work (e.g., A Penny Saved, LJ 4/1/95), Godfrey discussed ways to make children financially responsible. Here she focuses on women's need to take control of their money and their lives, addressing specifically those who are totally naive about money or who have assumed the men in their lives would take care of business. Rather than staying ignorant or dependent, women should become self-reliant and prepared for the future, counsels the author. Through quizzes, lists, and anecdotes, she urges women to examine their attitudes and knowledge. Her advice covers such areas as saving, shopping, insuring, and investing, as well as issues related to such life stages as marriage, child rearing, divorce, and retirement. Although the book is not comprehensive, its conversational, upbeat style makes it a good choice for popular collections.?Ilse Heidmann, San Marcos, Tex.
