Synopsis

Toby Johnson, a student and friend of the mythology scholar, Joseph Campbell, discusses the modern search for spiritual purpose and truth, a quest for a meaningful myth for modern society, in a story of a personal journey of self-discovery.      In writing about modern expressions of spiritual meaning, Johnson critiques Werner Erhard's est Training. This book began as Johnson's doctoral dissertation on parallels between the medieval German mystic Meister Eckhart and the first-century Buddhist sage Nagarjuna. In both, Johnson finds the image of "emptiness" as the ultimate clue to Enlightenment and the realization of God. Woven into that discussion of religious meaning, the course of Toby Johnson's personal life as a Catholic seminarian turned comparative religions scholar, psychotherapist, and community activist gives real life example of the philosophical quest.      Johnson has updated this book twice. The revised edition from Celestial Arts (1991) is subtitled: An Appreciation of Joseph Campbell. The third and updated edition (2017) is titled: Finding Your Own True Myth: What I Learned from Joseph Campbell: The Myth of the Great Secret III.
