The popular sportscaster recalls his thirty-five-year career from his early days as a student spotter for the legendary Bill Stern through his twenty-five years in major league baseball sportscasting and thirty years in pro football broadcasting

Nelson recounts his climb from a humble Tennessee boyhood to the top ranks of sports broadcasting. After stints as a reporter, in various sports jobs, and World War II service as an Army Public Information Officer, he became a top radio and TV announcer of college and pro football and other sports and was the voice of the New York Mets for 17 years. Nelson is uninhibited in reporting encounters and contacts with presidents, generals, athletes, and other celebrities, and in appraisingnot always favorablyfellow broadcasters. Still, he writes knowingly of a sports broadcaster's work and life and gives an often touching account of a bittersweet family life. Recommended. Morey Berger, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Freehold, N.J.
