In this breezy, occasionally tongue-in-cheek, well-researched group portrait of just such entrepreneurs, freelance writer Sheehy singles out former governor John Connally, the Hunt dynasty of silver barons, and investment magnate and richest Texan H. Ross Perot. Perhaps most typical of the breed, she notes, is Clayton Williams, astute, deceptively folksy rancher-oilman-banker and 1990 Republican Texas gubernatorial candidate. This is a frothy collection of biographical sketches of wealthy Texans. Both men nd women, mostly WASP, are represented; some names will be familiar to general audiences (H. Ross Perot, T. Boone Pickens, the Bass brothers, Mary Kay Ash, and the Hunts), but most of the subjects will be known only to other Texans. The sketches are rather superficial; readers who are interested in more than the soap-opera offerings here would be better served by some of the titles listed in the bibliography. Only those Texas libraries in areas where the "big rich" live may want to consider for purchase.
