PreSchool-K Many books deal with the arrival of a new baby, but here's one with a twist. A parrot, a Siamese cat, and a dog are nonplussed by the ``new pet'' their people bring home. It has no favored attributes (tail, feathers, teeth), and some noticeable disadvantagesnoise and odor. This non-human trio tries exemplary behavior in an attempt to prove the new pet superfluous. When this appears futile, they react with characteristic misbehavior. However, when the baby cries and no one hears her, it is the animals who come to the rescue. Watercolor and pastel illustrations, dominated by blue-green hues, carry the tale. The pets' expressions are always surprised and keep readers' focus moving. The baby's coppery red hair contrasts effectively with the rest of the cool palette. This is a book for children too young to articulate their feelings (as in Nobody Asked Me If I Wanted a Baby Sister Dial, 1971). Even the very young will be able to relate to the transparent examples set by the real pets. Mood swings and resultant discipline are made less frightening by a loving, peaceful conclusion.
