As president of the Los Angeles Olympics Organizing Committee, his task was formidable: "to cut through all boundariesgeographical, political, religious, and culturaland create bridges that would join all the participants of the games for sixteen brief days." Support for the games came primarily from the private sector in the form of corporate sponsorships and from a host of volunteers.
