Afraid of almost everything, Furlie Cat becomes a bully scaring everyone else until the night he is trapped in a tree.

PreSchool-Grade 2 Furlie longs to be an exciting outdoor cat, but he is too frightened to leave his house. He is afraid of birds, shadows and most of all, Oscar, the neighbor's dog. Then he practices being brave. He makes faces in the mirror, he growls at mice, and one big day he growls at Oscar. To his surprise Oscar runs. Fraidy Furlie is now ferocious Furlie, and he becomes the neighborhood bully. It is only when a bear chases him up a tree and he spends a frightening night on a tree limb that he thinks about all of the animals he has frightened, vowing never to be a bully again. Furlie is an enjoyable character to whom children will relate. The brightly colored illustrations are very funny and convincingly show this bright orange cat's metamorphosis from fearful to ferocious to confident. The large pictures surrounded by ample white space make this a welcome addition for use at story time. Evelyn Homan, Children's Lexington Public Library District, Ill.
