From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 Eleven-year-old Molly Parker and her father have been alone on their Northwestern ranch for five years, since her mother's death in a car crash. Like most girls her age, Molly indulges in romantic daydreams. She hopes that her father and her teacher, Miss Miller, will fall in love and does her best to engineer a romance between them. When the semi-legendary "Ghost," a wild white stallion, appears and steals her father's best mare, Molly wants him to regain the mare but doesn't want to see the proud white stallion captured. The Ghost's captivity forces Molly to give up some of her romantic ideas, realizing that her dream of being the one to tame him and her hope for her father's romance are only daydreams. Thompson's characters are somewhat flat. Even Molly seems fairly two dimensional, and although she gives up her daydreams, readers won't feel any sense of real growth. While Thompson clearly constructs the conflict between realism and romanticism in the mixed feelings Molly has about the wild horses, she undermines her efforts by creating a romantic ending for the Ghost. Nonetheless, this book is short and fast moving with an attractive cover and illustrations, and it should find an audience among avid preteen horse fanciers. Louise L. Sherman, Anna C.
