PreSchool-Grade 2 Tiny Turtle doesn't want to be a turtle; he'd rather be an eagle. Mom encourages him to give it a try. He builds wings out of sticks and leaves, flaps, falls, gets picked up by a real eagle, and is dropped bleary-eyed back into the pond. Sample text: "Whew! Ta-da! Whoops! THUMPITY. . .BUMP. . .BUMP. . .PLOP!" Ross seems to be aiming at the pre-primer reading level, but he is ignoring the fact that beginning readers deserve interesting stories. There is no incentive to persevere with this one. What happens to Tiny Turtle can be predicted by any five year old in the first few pages, and the colorful pictures can't save the story.
