In nineteenth-century Cornwall, a region torn by political strife and labor unrest, beautiful Ellen Bray finds herself involved with three very different men

The heroine of the title is a young woman living in late-19th-century Cornwall who works as a bal-maiden, dressing ore that comes from the tin mines. Ellen loves two men. The first, a young miner names James, ends up in prison because of a violent uprising he leads against the brutal mine owners. She then falls in love with Dr. Robert Buchan, a spineless individual who has seen first-hand the harshness of the miners' working conditions yet still flirts with the idea of running for Parliament as a candidate of the owners. The difficult life of the miners and their families is well described, but the novel is thinly plotted and the characters are boring.
