From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Readers are invited "just for a day" to accompany a young girl on a wildlife adventure as she becomes a Canada goose. Ryder's graceful, quasi-poetic text attempts to capture the physical sensations of flying, swimming, feeding, and preening; to her credit, she does not condescend to children by anthropomorphosis or overwhelm them with too many details, but instead encourages them to create their own images ("You dip your smooth dark bill into the shining water and drink. The cool water slides down your long, long throat"). A surprising amount of natural history is conveyed using this technique but, after all, an average day in the life of a Canada goose is not a terribly exciting one and the lack of any real plot may disappoint some youngsters. Rothman's realistic acrylic paintings offer unusual views and perspectives and add greatly to the book's appeal. The vividness of the illustrations make this a good bet for sharing with groups studying birds and flight; they may just be seduced by the invitation of the geese to "Come along, come along." --Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, CT
