From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 4 This lovely book contains 14 brief poems which highlight the qualities of various plants. Steele considers the ``pinkness'' that ought to be the flavor of chive blossoms, the memories of summer that the aroma of dried lavender can bring, and the vivid blue of cornflowers. Each poem is framed by a careful watercolor painting of the plant and often includes a small picture that tells another side of the story in the poem. Facing each poem is a large framed watercolor of children with the plant. The featured child is an engaging blonde with round glasses who is often accompanied by a large rabbit. The watercolors encompass a variety of moods, from meditative to whimsical, and each picture evokes a sensory response that complements the nature of the plant. Endpapers lined with willowy chives frame a book which provides a charming pairing of pictures and text. Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie
