PreSchool-Grade 1-- Sophie's distress and confusion are because her quiet times on her mother's lap are no longer the warm, cuddly moments that they used to share. The mother is having a new baby, and there is no room for Sophie to sit and be rocked or read to right now. Everyone else is excited about the baby, but Sophie feels left out and lonely. Fortunately for this little girl, her loving family shows patience and understanding for her feelings. When her new brother arrives home, Sophie finds that her mother's lap is as inviting as ever, and she opens her own arms to her new sibling. Realistic watercolor illustrations dramatically portray the emotions of the text. Sorensen uses primarily earth tones throughout except for the purplish-blue splash of Sophie's shirt, which emphasizes her importance within the story. Facial expressiveness and the portrayal of streaming sunlight are particularly noteworthy and show the emotions of love and respect for one another. Kindness and joy are the hallmarks of these evocative illustrations.
