Kindergarten-Grade 2-- This delightfully fresh counting book offers a winning combination--a rhythmic text that works as a story, with cheerful illustrations that add humor and charm. The feisty young heroine tries to get her sleeping turtle to move, but despite the fact that she can get two goldfish, three kittens, and on up to ten rabbits to obey her commands, she can't get her turtle to move. Children will enjoy joining her lament: "I can't get my turtle to move," which is repeated after each sequence. They will also be happy to see the turtle finally emerge, thanks to a bribe of lettuce. Chambliss' lighthearted illustrations are the perfect complement to the text. Her lively animals have priceless expressions and even the ants have personality. In her morning rounds of the farm, she encourages two fish to swim, three kittens to purr, finally calling on 10 rabbits that hop at her request. How does she get that turtle to move? She mentions lunch, and he amiably pads over to his lettuce leaf. O'Donnell ( Maggie Doesn't Want to Move ) successfully combines a counting story with a genial tour of different animals on the farm. Chambliss's happy-go-lucky pictures show colorful scenes of everyone involved, from munching inchworms to marching ants. Ages 3-5.
