A girl imagines the general store she will own some day and all the things for sale in it, from bolts of calico to bunches of bananas

PreSchool-Grade 1 As she did with Paul Revere's Ride (Greenwillow, 1985), Parker illustrates a well-known childhood poem. Here it is General Store , Rachel Field's 1920's verse about a child's imaginary store. Parker's framed colorful crayon drawings create the sense of both nostalgia and childhood play as the little girl fills her store with items and furnishings typical of that era. Contemporary children, accustomed to computerized discount supermarkets, may not recognize a wood-burning stove, dry goods barrels, and bolts of calico. Other items such as scissors, seeds, fruit and, of course, candy jars will be delightfully familiar. Even if the store in this book isn't one modern youngsters will recognize, all children have ``played store'' and fantasized about what they would sell in their own market. This book will fuel those imaginings. It is also a fanciful way to introduce today's children to the shops of yesteryear. Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, Wis.
