Grade 5-8 When Gusty McCaw realizes that Ambassador, supposedly servicing a mare in the breeding shed, is actually still in his stall, she makes some hypotheses and discoveries which put her in life-threatening danger. Suspecting that her father was killed to prevent his learning of the substitution of American Express for Ambassador, Gusty discovers the ruse and alerts the Jockey Club. Fearing that they don't believe her, she tries to get more firm evidence and is almost killed. Written in a breezy first person, Ride a Dark Horse is a somewhat improbable but nonetheless exciting horse racing mystery in which Gusty leads the lifestyle many young horse fanciers would envy. Hall draws a vivid picture of the world of a breeding farm, from wealthy aristocrats to sleazy creeps. While this story has less depth than some of Hall's earlier books, mystery buffs and horse story fans won't complain. The villains are villainous and the danger sometimes terrifying. Although belief is stretched at timesone wonders how a former alcoholic could fail to detect vodka in a 7-Up, and the reason given for switching the studs seems weakthis is a satisfying book. The ending, in which Gusty contemplates working for the security division of the Jockey Club and the dust jacket reference to this as a ``Gusty McCaw Mystery'' indicate that this is the first of a projected series.
